Nasce a Reading, in Pennsylvania nel 1958. Frequenta per due semestri l’Ivy School of Professional Art di Pittsburgh, città in cui tiene la sua prima personale nel 1978. Nello stesso anno entra alla School of Visual Arts di New York (SVA) e si inserisce nell’ambiente street art della città attraverso i suoi celebri graffiti metropolitani, frequentando tra gli altri Kenny Scharf e Jean-Michel Basquiat e subendo l’influenza di A. Warhol, J. Dubuffet, P. Alechinsky e altri. Come studente della SVA, Haring sperimenta performance, video, installazione e collage, mantenendo sempre una forte dedizione al disegno, improntato a un tipo singolare di espressione grafica basato sul primato della linea. Tra il 1982 e il 1989 realizza più di cinquanta opere pubbliche sparse in tutto il mondo, molte delle quali realizzate a scopo benefico. Nel 1988 gli viene diagnosticato l’Aids e l’anno successivo viene fondata la Keith Haring Foundation.
