Nasce nel 1965 a Bristol, cresce a Leeds e dal 1986 al 1989 studia al Goldsmiths College di Londra. Nel 1988 progetta e cura Freeze, la prima di una serie di mostre collettive simbolo della generazione degli Young British Artist. Dalla fine degli anni ‘80, realizza una vasta serie di installazioni, sculture, dipinti e disegni per esplorare le complesse relazioni tra arte, bellezza, religione, scienza, vita e morte. Con i suoi lavori investiga e sfida le certezze del mondo contemporaneo, ed esamina tutte le incertezze insite nella natura dell’uomo.
