Nasce a Pittsburgh, in Pennsylvania nel 1928. Warhol è considerato uno degli artisti più celebri del XX secolo nonché tra i più importanti esponenti della Pop Art americana. Dopo la formazione presso il Carnegie Institute of Technology della città natale, nel 1949 si stabilisce a New York dove intraprende la professione di grafico pubblicitario presso riviste come Vogue, Glamour e Harper’s Bazar. Nel 1952 espone alla sua prima esposizione personale presso la Hugo Gallery di New York.  Nel 1961 realizza le prime opere serigrafiche elaborate in serie portando alle estreme conseguenze il principio della riproducibilità dell’opera d’arte e dell’arte come prodotto commerciale.  Si interessa al cinema a partire dal 1963 e sperimenta la produzione di lungometraggi e film d’avanguardia. Collabora dal 1967 con il gruppo rock dei Velvet Underground ed è fondatore nel 1969 della rivista Interview.
