Artista, regista e fotografa americana, nasce a Glen Ridge, New Jersey, nel 1954. Dopo un inizio pittorico, all’inizio degli anni Settanta realizza i primi autoritratti fotografici e nel 1976 dopo la laurea si trasferisce a New York dove, dal 1980, instaura una lunga collaborazione con la Metro Pictures Gallery. L’artista utilizza performance e fotografia nella creazione di opere in cui il travestimento è l’elemento caratterizzante. Le sue messe in scena, di cui l'artista stessa è il soggetto, nascono per essere riprese dalla macchina fotografica e sono strettamente condizionate dal codice linguistico peculiare al mezzo: composizione, formato, inquadratura, uso espressivo delle ombre o dei colori.
